Since the beginning of 2019, CEJA’s members and partners have brought their stories and voices to the Capitol to ensure that statewide funding to improve their health and quality of life goes to the communities who need it the most. We worked tirelessly, meeting with our state representatives to ensure that our priorities were heard. From catalytic investments to energy efficiency upgrades in high need disadvantaged communities, here’s how CEJA’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund priorities fared in the 2019-2020 California state budget.
During the biggest climate mobilization the Bay Area has ever seen, we demanded the real climate leadership California needs by uplifting community rooted solutions to the climate crisis from across the state. CEJA was proud to join the frontline contingent and more than 30,000 people in the streets of San Francisco for Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice, and the It Takes Roots Solidarity to Solutions (Sol2Sol) week with our delegation of more than 200 from EJ communities across California. In our new report, Advancing Environmental Justice in California: How CalEnviroScreen Plays a Critical Role, we discuss the importance of CalEnviroScreen 3.0: its purpose, the history of its development, and how it works to advance environmental justice at both the state and local levels. The report also clarifies common misunderstandings about the CalEnviroScreen, and how it should be used to not only direct important investments, but also to create environmental protections for areas most overburdened by pollution.
CEJA hosted a series of in-district community town halls to create a space to educate elected officials on environmental justice, immigrant rights, and housing rights, engage community residents and their elected officials in dialogue, help move decision-makers closer to championing our policies, and bridge movements.
Finally the commitment to make clean up a priority has come! We look forward to seeing clean up efforts happening on the ground and health improvements in the community.
California Air Resources Board is considering allowing REDD programs into the state’s already-flawed cap and trade program. CEJA is working hard to stop this!

This year, CEJA has been redefining environmental justice in California. One of our legislative priorities, AB 1628 by Assemblymember Robert Rivas, enhances the state’s definition of environmental justice to include the “meaningful involvement” of all people in environmental or land use decisions. AB 1628 would recognize the health, dignity and agency of all people, promoting the environmental health and quality of life that everyone deserves.
